Dr Edward Mahama, the flag bearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), has said he would make his pick for the running mate in the first week of September.
Dr Mahama who said the party executive were currently having discussions with four persons for the job, did not rule out Mr George Aggudey, the Convention People’s Party (CPP) 2004 presidential candidate.
“I am a generic CPP and Aggudey is also a CPP but I cannot answer yes or no to the question whether Mr Aggudey is on the list of four people being considered for the position”, he said.
He described his list of four persons being weighed for the running mate slot as classified but added that the 1996 episode when he selected a female as his running mate, Ms Dede Mantey, could be repeated, “because the gender balance is high this time.”
According to Dr Mahama, whiles the party executives were having discussions with the four persons, other groups, including himself, were also investigating their backgrounds to find the most suitable.
He said even before he embarked on his United States trip recently, he was aware of a number of people who were lobbying other executives of the PNC to be given the slot.
He said he was bidding his time in the selection, especially with the consultation, to avoid a situation where a chosen running mate would turn down the offer in public.
If Dr Mahama is able to select his running mate, it would bring to three the number of presidential aspirants who have selected their running mates.
The first was Prof J.E.A. Mills of the NDC who selected Mr John Mahama, the Member of Parliament for Bole Bamboi, followed by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo of the NPP who selected Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, a former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana.
