Liberal Democratic Organisation, an NGO committed to the advancement of democracy, has advised people in the zongo communities, especially those in Nima, Accra, to be wary of politicians who use them for their selfish gain.
He says although the constitution guarantees the right to demonstrate, people should not be coaxed into such activity for the benefit of individuals with vested interest.
Sheikh Awal Larry, the spokesperson for the group, who addressed the press in Accra on Monday, explained why they supported the sale of 70 per cent sale of Ghana Telecom.
According to him, the Committee for Joint Action (CJA), which was against the sale of part of the GT share and threatened to embark on a demonstration, were only doing so not for the sake of Ghanaians but only to score cheap political points.
Sheikh Larry alleged that the CJA wanted to create the false impression that practically all of Ghana was against privatisation, in order to scare away foreign investors who may want to invest in the nation’s economy.
He said their resolve to support the sale of 70 per cent share of GT stemmed from the fact that other competitors in the telecomunication industry were doing better while the fortunes of GT were continually dwindling.
He said the Kufuor Administration took the decision to sell 70 per cent of GT to Vodafone, primarily to avoid the collapse of GT and also ensure that Ghanaians enjoyed the best of services from GT.
Sheikh Larry said all the telecommunication players that had links with multinational companies were doing well both in delivery and in profits and that it would be unacceptable to allow GT to collapse, while there was an opportunity to save it.
