THE Electoral Commission (EC) has given the assurance that it is taking concrete steps to ensure the country has a credible register for the December elections.
As a first step, the District Review Committees are currently working throughout the country and have almost completed their reports for submission to the commission.
The Deputy Commissioner in-charge of Operations, Mr Safo Kantanka told the Daily Graphic that the commission said the Regional Directors of the EC, in conjunction with the commission, would be meeting at Ho in the Volta Region on September 1 and 2, 2008 to receive and assess regional reports on the registration.
“After that, we will clean the register and exhibit them for public scrutiny and verification,” Mr Safo Katanka said.
He emphasised that the commission was very much concerned about delivering a reliable register to the country and would not do anything “that would put our register into doubt”.
He said when the register was exhibited, the Ghanaian electorate would be expected to help further ensure a clean register by disclosing with proof dead relations, double registration, and registration of minors, among others, to guarantee a very clean register for Election 2008.
Already, he said, the commission had received a number of good suggestions from Ghanaians, including the politicians, civil society groups and the academia “and we are taking on board all the good suggestions offered the commission”.
He gave the assurance that the commission would continue to work within the electoral calendar to ensure that the December elections were conducted smoothly.
